A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE STAKEHOLDERS MEETING CONVENED BY THE IGEDE TRADITIONAL INTERMEDIATE COUNCIL HELD ON THE 18th APRIL, 2022 AT THE PALACE OF ADIRAHU NY’IGEDE
On the 18th April, 2022, Igede people across Oju and Obi LGAs converged at the Palace of Adirahu Ny’Igede , HRM, Chief Oga Ero to take stock and reflect on cardinal issues bordering on the Igede traditional council and the larger Igede nation.
The meeting which was chaired by the erudite Prof. John Egbe Enyi was well attended by critical stakeholders drawn from academia, various political parties, religious and pressure groups, etc.
Among others things, the following resolutions were reached:
1. That the Igede Traditional Council be accorded the needed recognition and respect by every son and daughter of Igede
2. That a review be made on the nature of traditional marriages in Igede as high bride prices and other alien practices were roundly condemned.
3. That the exorbitant style of conducting funerals and burials remain condemnable in Igede. Any corpse across the Igede nation which stays in the morgue beyond 14 days will not be accorded the needed traditional rites.
4 . That Igede should foster mechanism for conflict resolution among communities while giving premium to peace building as hatred and disunity are inimical and hinder development.
5. That every family, community or village should discourage child trafficking, child labour, arson, drug abuse, youth restiveness and antagonism with conscious efforts at character change and behavioral or value reorientation.
6.That mutualism and brotherliness be allowed to thrive in Igede politics with emphasis that political representation be considered as a call to service on the principles and tenets of accountability, commitment and responsibility deviod of uneccessary bickering, animosity and antagonism. Consequently, the position of House of Representatives in 2023 be allowed to move to Oju LGA.
7. That Igede should consciously make efforts to encouraging farming and to maximally utilize our agricultural potentials and resources in order to boost productivity while enhancing the status of Igede as a core agrarian people.
8.That there is an urgent need for EPWE-EDII to be convened as every clan was charged to do the requisite cleansing as no one can go to equity with unclean hands and filthiness.
9. That the two (2) Local Government Areas of Oju and Obi should enhance their support to the Igede Traditional Council and the apex sociocultural organization,Om’Ny’Igede
10. That there should be a total ban on the sale and consumption of illicit drugs in Igede.
11. That there is an urgent need for Igede Traditional Council and some critical stakeholders to meet and appeal to the National Population Commission to complete the stalled enumeration within the Oju LG Municipal Area comprising of Ibilla, Oju and Ukpa communities.
12. That the State Government through its relevant agencies should hasten the process of the much awaited boundary demarcation between the Ukpute and Bonta communities of Oju and Konshisha LGAs as this will foster the restoration of lasting peace within the area.
13.That the negative use of social media by Igede indegenes remains condemnable.
14. That relevant Committees be constituted by the Igede Traditional Council to address the identified challenges and to provide a veritable roadmap which shall enhance development.
