OPENING THOUGHT:
“A person is said to be literate if he/she can read in his/her mother’s tongue, and write so that it could be read and understood by another person” –United Nations.
Igede language is the only thing on earth that Igede people have full ownership of. We owe a responsibility for its development, preservation and presentation in the best possible form to the next generations.
The extinction of an indigenous language is one of the biggest tragedies that particular people might experience. Language extinction occurs when rules guiding its qualities are compromised, when quality speaking and writing are grossly or partially neglected. Language loss undermines people’s sense of identity and original worth. We can be speaking the language, but when it is not matched with correct writing, the language is on the edge of a cliff and needs a little push.
IGEDE PROVERBS:
Proverb: OKOJI OOKPOKPO A MYỊ IPYINU KA.
Literal level: One tree cannot make a forest.
Contextual level: No one person can be enough to provide the needed solution to all. No one is an island. You need others to give a meaningful and impactful value.
