Igedeland comprising majorly Oju and Obi used to be part of the defunct Idoma division during the colonial era and later Oturkpo division during the post-colonial period. In February 1976, it attained its divisional status following the Local Government reforms. In 1996, Obi was created out of Oju, and it became the second Local Government predominantly inhabited by the Igede people. Igede comprises three main districts: Igede Central, Ito and Uwokwu districts.
Since the creation of Obi Local Government, the Local Government has produced many Council Chairmen, both the appointed and the elected.
