Thinking about all the ‘SOS’ from Zone C on political marginalization.
The reality check– for now, the political visibility and relevance of Igede people in the current political permutation at the State or Federal level may be clothed with a colour too dark to admire. Many political office allocations have been done already or at the confirmation level, and we seem to be invisible, and our relevance is travelling on a decline into an astronomical twilight.
A few contemplations ran through my mind: could it be that there is a value we need to add to ourselves? Do we need more dose of unity of purpose to improve our visibility and relevance? Have we not cried loud enough? Shall we stop this customized lamentation after every election period? Do we need to look inward and adjust the current political strategy? Could it be that we have done our best but are just victims? Are the dominant tribes in the State deliberately causing our invisibility? Could it be the issue of population? Or have we, through our actions or inactions, tightened the nozzle against ourselves? Are we going in the same or different political direction and fighting for our selfish interests?
Whatever our response to the above questions may be, politically, we are crawling and have achieved snail-like progress at the end of the last election season. I don’t know if we are at the beginning, middle or end of our coping mechanism.
Dangerous overconfidence and empty grandstanding will not save us. We need to organize a political summit three years before the next election. Most of the summits failed because they were organized either after party primaries or with an eye on a particular candidate instead of Igede nation.
Maybe, just maybe, in 2027, we may…??? But till then, God dey. Nobody should construct stanza two of the regular lamentation. Please permit me to go and hear the SOS again.
