I feel constraint to put up this write up after weeks of witnessing unsavoury outing by Hon David Ogewu’s supporters.
I was reluctant because as a known supporter of another candidate, I will receive backlash from his foot soldiers.
I thought his media team would have issued a statement disowning such communication and warn adherents to be magnanimous in victory.
I have screenshots of many of the posts calling names, profiling individuals as ENEMIES THAT WERE PUT TO SHAME, AND HOW THEY SHOULD BURY THEIR HEADS IN SHAME FOREVER AND HOW THEY HATED OGEWU BECAUSE OF HIS GOOD INTENTIONS FOR IGEDE AND HOW THEY ARE ENEMIES OF THE LIBERATION AGENDA.
It will be immature of me to put the comments and screen shot up on the social media again. Noteworthy, these were men in the APC before he left APGA, they are holders of one form of party leadership and because they have a different perspective or interest, they are quality to be branded enemies and shame-worthy.
I want to talk about branding and sainthood, but before that, let me ask few questions.
Is Ogewu actually faultless without personal interest, without unsavoury approach to leadership or issues?
Can we say with certainty that all his actions are correct and none has ran foul when viewed from the moral and ethical prism?
Do you become automatically a wicked enemy if your opinion does not align with Ogewu’s own in Igede land?
How much will Ogewu achieve without his party men and even those in the other political parties?
How many of his supporters that are insulting people are prepared and qualify to be appointed minister, commissioner or SSG?
Are we doing Ogewu political favour if we increase his enemity tentacles?
Back to profiling and sainthood!
In politics, branding opponents as enemies is a tactic that some politicians use to rally their base and gain support. This corrosive approach to politics has become more prevalent in recent times in Igede land, with supporters on both sides of the aisle engaging in primitive utterances.
This kind of branding is harmful because it creates a narrative of “us vs. them” that can lead to political polarization and further divide the cord of unity. Rather than promoting a healthy debate of ideas, branding one’s opponents as enemies undermines the democratic process and can fuel intolerance and hate.
Overall, branding political opponents as enemies is a dangerous tactic that has no place in a healthy democracy. It undermines the importance of debate and compromise and can lead to a breakdown in democratic institutions. Instead, politicians should focus on promoting open and honest dialogue and working collaboratively to address the issues facing our underdeveloped land..
It is not uncommon for politicians to make grandiose statements and exaggerate their accomplishments in order to gain support from the public. However, a politician who claims to be a saint is a rare example of hubris taken to an extreme level.
The idea of a politician being a saint is contradictory. Saints are revered because of their deep spirituality, humility and service to others, whereas politicians are known for their ambition, calculation, and often times lack of ethics.
The dangers of such claims lie in the potential for leaders to become too self-important and justify their actions under the guise of being a “saintly figure.” This can lead to a disregard for moral and ethical standards, as well as a reluctance to admit fault or accept criticism.
Politicians who claim to be saints should be viewed with skepticism and scrutiny, and their actions and policies should be closely monitored. It is important for leaders to remain humble and grounded in reality in order to effectively lead and serve the people.
Ultimate sainthood is a lofty and unattainable goal, but politicians can still strive for moral integrity and ethical behavior in their public service.
I hope HON OGEWU will caution his supporters.
Once again, accept my congratulations and may your tenure bring the needed development and unity to Igede land.
