EKURWE: OPEN LETTER TO HON. TONY AKPA, THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF OBI LGC OF BENUE STATE.

Accept my best wishes and compliment of the season, dear Honourable and revered son of Agba.

My dear Honourable, it is evident that our nation is a land of sin and with dissimilar kinds of sinners. Surprisingly, every soul, especially politicians at this time of elections, wants to make the moralist dirge to stay afloat, albeit pretentiously, to score cheap points. They may get away with their narratives with some, but for others who know too well, it’s an utter show of duplicity. Typically, a murderer will kill, and a thief will steal from you, but you will never know where you stand with a liar. The comments above are not to indict anybody, as nobody is guilty unless proven by a competent court. It is a general opening remark.

I write this letter because you are a full-blooded patriot and your zero tolerance for injustice and falsehood is topnotch. You have proven these virtues in all your personal and public life. You are allergic to people whose public life falls short of the conditionalities of etiquette and ethical conduct. You are known for disallowing evil doers to flourish and be sheltered by a system that hides them from public ignominy. You are known for exposing corruption of any form to the binoculars of the interrogating public.

For some time now, there has been a public cry over the state of Odiapa bridge in your Area Council. A few allegations were made about the Odiapa bridge:

1. That it was awarded for the whopping sum of 30 million naira.

2. That it was part of the constituency project of Senator Aba Moro, a Senator representing Zone C of Benue Senatorial district.

3. That it was assumed to be executed and commissioned.

4. That the money for the bridge was diverted to do 1 km trunk ‘e’ road within the Local Government during Hon Agnes Erebe’s tenure.

5. The current unveiled site called ‘Eyemark’ for tracking all Federal Government projects reveals that Odiapa bridge was marked as completed.

6. In reality, nothing is done on the said bridge.

In public life, as you know, one false accusation is enough to ruin what you have built for years. If Odiapa community are mobilized for a peaceful protest– they will end up in your office as the holder of their voice and mandate. A protest, even if it is peaceful, will be a dent in your records, and so we humbly solicit you kindly find out the reality about the Odiapa bridge.

The ‘Odiapa bridge saga’ seems to undermine the worth, mental responsiveness and awareness of Igede people and Odiapa Community in particular. I have confidence that you will get to the root of the shrouded and divergent narratives about the bridge. Ultimately, we will know the truth, and any unacceptable and somewhat underwhelming actions will be undressed.

I hope this appeal will meet you well and enjoy your attention.

Ona Kingston (for Ekurwe: Igede Watch on 24th December, 2022)
