RT. HON. SAMSON OKWU LEADS HIGH POWERED DELEGATION

Updated: Jun 28, 2022

RT. HON. SAMSON OKWU LEADS HIGH POWERED DELEGATION OF IGEDE PEOPLE TO MEET WITH THE GOVERNOR OF BENUE STATE, HIS EXCELLENCY, SAMUEL ORTOM.

In a build-up to party primary elections for various political offices, many qualified Igede indigenes came out with mouth-watering articles on social media platforms. Myekeemedia did an unedited collection of some articles found on Facebook in May 2022.

Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu, Member house of representatives for Oju/Obi Federal Constituency has led a powerful delegation of Igede people to meet with the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency, Samuel Ortom, to, among other things, demand of the Governor to use his vintage position to influence the rotation of Benue South Senatorial seat to Old Oju in 2023 in line with equity, justice and fair play, demand for the construction of Oju-Awajir road, Aliade Mbakine-Obarike Ito road and other sundry challenges plaguing Igede Nation.

The demands were contained in a well-articulated address as delivered to the Governor by Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu. While appreciating the Governor for the timely resolution of the crisis between Bonta and Ukpute people of Konshisha and Oju LGAs, the delegation appealed for sustained security patrol of the road to ensure security of lives and property along the road especially as we approach electioneering season.

The delegation also appealed to the governor to declare emergency on employment of Igede people, particularly Obi LGA, since the few ones in the service are no more due to retirement, the construction of rural roads and the electrification of Igede communities.

Hon. Ode Ageh and Rt. Hon. Egbiri Idaah who spoke for and on behalf of Oju and Obi Local Government Areas, respectively, harped on the need for the Governor to expedite action on the needs of the Igede people as captured in the document earlier presented to him even as they declared the unalloyed support of Igede Nation to his government.

In his response, the Executive Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Samuel Ortom appreciated Rt. Hon. Samson Okwu for deeming it necessary to lead his people to him to present their demands. He said, it was true that the contracts for the construction of the two roads mentioned were awarded but that what stalled execution of the projects was paucity of funds, promising that the government of Benue State was trying to access funds in order to address some pressing needs of the people of Benue including infrastructural needs.

He said, Igede people getting Senate in 2023 is feasible if the instruments of dialogue, negotiations and compromise were employed even as he promised that every aspirant will enjoy a level playing field in the primaries and general elections.

He said, very soon, Benue State Government will advertise for the recruitment of 5,000 primary school teachers which will be done local government by local government to avoid the service being flooded by people from one section of the State to the detriment of others. He explained that what delayed the exercise was the dwindling financial resources to the State from the Federation and promised that as the fortunes of the state improves, other grey areas of concern will be addressed and thus enjoined all and sundry to support his government and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming elections to rescue and rebuild Nigeria from the many years of ruin and economic comatose caused by APC led Federal Government.
