SUNDAY NIGHT WITH EKURWE
26 June 2022
“So Isaac moved away from there and encamped in the Valley of Gerar and settled there. 18 Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the time of his father Abraham, which the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died, and he gave them the same names his father had given them.” (Genesis 26:17-18 NIV)
The essence of wisdom for the church at a time like this is to look back into her own history. When she does this, what will she find? The church will find that no revival has ever been known in history that denied the fundamentals of the Christian faith or neglected such vital truths. The condition of the church today suggests that her need for revival and reawakening is as urgent as it has ever been.
From the text before us, Isaac dug again the well of his father Abraham that the evil Philistine buried with rubbish. We must travel back into history and dig out what made the ancient pilgrims successful. We must travel and dig out what brought the fire of revival. These truths– the authority of the Bible, the Sovereignty of God, the doctrine of sin, and the wrath of God that are buried by the new gospel preachers must be digged out and bring to the forefront. Our message to the lost world must be about the will of God, if we are desirous of the real revival.
The gospel coated with distorted ways to salvation; messages that emphasised salvation through works or any other means except faith in Christ are the rubbish that have filled up the well of our fathers of faith. Revival cannot happen without the proclamation of these fundamental truths. Whole truth about Christ and the sacrifice that secured our redemption. 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 is a testimony of Paul the Apostle on the kind of gospel we must dig up for revival to break forth: “When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. 2 For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. 4 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, 5 so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” (NIV)
We must dig out and bring out the original water that was closed with dirt of arrogance, pride, and the tendency to glorify oneself rather than God, as they stand between us and God’s mighty blessings of revival. The church must look back into the history, dig out the fundamental truth that enabled the ancient revival. The old time religion is still good enough for us.
Keep a date with EKURWE next Sunday.
