“They dress the wound of my people as though it were not serious. ‘Peace, peace,’ they say, when there is no peace.” (Jeremiah 6:14 NIV)
Everyone desires to have peace all around and in all spheres of their endeavour. As children of God, we are followers of the prince of peace, and so it behoves us to advocate and embrace peace as long as it depends on us.
Meaningless mouthing about peace will not bring it to the world or ourselves. Peace is more than five lettered words. It is not a mere cessation of hostilities; instead, it is a positive and specific relationship with God. A gracious relationship that a person enters into. It is a spiritual reality in the human heart when it comes into vital contact with the infinite God.
Jesus made it clear that His peace is different from the world. John 14:27 says; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (NIV)
It is the issue of the heart and a spiritual renewal according to the nature of God. So, any peace spoken to yourself before God pronounce His own is not peace. God’s presence in the heart of a person is what gives peace. No matter the pronouncement, claiming, or religious exercises, without the definite entrance of God to deal with the sin issue in a person’s life, it could not be termed as peace originating from Christ. And as a point of fact, any peace outside Christ is not real peace.
The conscience is the voice of God inside a person that regulates our sensitivity to sin and righteousness. It is God’s way of warning and aid to disturb the inner peace when we turn away from Him. May we be careful not to assume or speak peace like the false Prophets of Jeremiah’s time to ourselves when God has not given that peace.
How does our conscience help in enhancing our sensitivity?
