SUNDAY NIGHT WITH EKURWE

Luke 10:25-28
“On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” 27 He answered:” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” (NIV)
Welcome to the series of exposition on this all-important question- WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE? This question is not only for Christians but for all humanity. All humans must relate appropriately to this question that bothers on the welfare of the soul and our place of dwelling after this life. How many times have we considered this reality? Eternity with God or without God is an appointment every mortal must keep and a fact we must consider with all awe.
For all those called by the name of the Lord and are with all solemnity conscious of eternity with God, this question must be at the forefront of their minds as they go about their daily activities. Once we have gotten an answer from the Lord Jesus, the author of eternal life, we must walk in the newness of the revelation with complete surrender and tell others about the new life and the found way.
Our first concern for consideration is the person the all-important question came from. As good as the question was, it was coming from a person with an evil intention- to test Jesus Christ. “On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” Christ, who knew the heart of all and understood the motive, asked: “What is written in the law?” “How do you read it?”
He was an expert and was not asking Christ because he wanted to be saved. How awful it was for a mortal to ask the Creator this all-important question and for a test.
What is the use of this for us today? Are we any different? Have we not either refused to ask the question or ask the question without a heart commitment or never willing to repent of sins? Some asked and received an answer and are not ready to embrace the life worthy of the calling or willing to give up all for the sake of the kingdom. Some are duplicitous and never surrender in totality. Some have the form of godliness and are wolves in sheep’s clothing. Some are in the fold for fame and recognition, though full of church activities that are for the view of other humans and are never interested in the question.
It is then necessary that we remind ourselves of this all-important question. WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?
Let us not only ask the question, but be interested in the following through the life of the kingdom. Let us ask this question even as saints, for it will serve as a check in all we do. Let the question be so loud that it will overshadow the murmur of self-will and all the enticement the world will offer.
May God help us to think thoroughly on this question as we live in this world and let this question be out of our sincere hearts and not like that expert who only asked to test the giver of eternal life.
What must I do to inherit eternal life?
Keep a date with us next Sunday.
